Description

Regis Jesuit is seeking a College Counselor for the 2019 - 2020 school year. Position will remain open until filled.

The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; familiarity with the goals, objectives, and mission of a Jesuit, college preparatory high school; the ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and demanding student and parent population. Candidate must have knowledge of colleges and universities nationwide: their academic programs, admission policies, and financial aid policies and procedures. Knowledge of standardized testing programs and interpretation of data is also an asset.  An ideal candidate would carry a Master’s degree in school counseling but this is not required. Strong candidates will also have demonstrated positive social and spiritual mentorship of students in the past.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Handling a full caseload of students, made up of approximately one-fifth of the juniors and seniors, and directing all aspects of the comprehensive college counseling program with each of them individually. This includes (but is not limited to):
    • Coordinating all group and individual meetings with students and families (including an hour-long junior-parent conference with every junior during second semester, as well as junior and senior college nights during first semester).
    • Writing a personal letter of recommendation for all seniors, utilizing information from parents, teachers, guidance counselors, school records, and the students themselves.
    • Providing college lists/pertinent handouts for students regarding specific areas of interest and college choices.
    • Educating students and parents about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing.
    • Submitting application support documents (via Edocs) for every senior in the fall semester.
    • Direct handling of any and all situations that arise in the college counseling process.
    • Maintaining regular contact, both verbal and by email, with each student’s guidance counselor about concerns and updates for that student.
  • Compiling/updating the school profile every fall.
  • Writing and facilitating the advisement curriculum (and all lesson plans) in the junior and senior years that pertain to the college search and application process in conjunction with the other counselors.
  • Serving as a liaison between students and colleges admissions offices as needed.
  • Assisting with all college counseling programs throughout the school year
  • Planning, coordinating, and administering the ACT test dates completed on the Regis Jesuit campus.
  • Developing college relationships through attendance at conferences, counselor information meetings, and college visits (as approved by the Dept Chair).
  • Direct hosting of college admissions representative visits to Regis Jesuit and coordinating student visits with them.
  • Hosting of the JET tour each year, hosting College evening information sessions for the greater Denver-Metro area when requested, hosting the Catholic College tour when it is being held at Regis Jesuit, and hosting other groups of colleges that visit on the same day.
  • Assisting with the upkeep of the Regis Jesuit Counseling Website, Facebook page, and Naviance programs.
  • Maintaining membership in the JHSCCA and NACAC.
  • Maintaining contact with students and parents regularly through email, Naviance postings, and the Red & White newsletter.
  • Responding to all phone and email messages within 24 hours.
  • Representing the College Counseling Program at parent-teacher conferences and Open House
  • Serving on committees that are an integral part of the school.
  • Attending outside extra-curricular events and sponsoring events that occur on the RJHS campus.
  • Attending workshops and classes that will further professional knowledge and help remain current with programs, policies, and practices that meet the needs of students.
  • Becoming part of a team of life-long learners who will serve as a model for our students and will commit to implementing effective school practices.
  • Other Duties as assigned by the Dept Chair and/or the Principal.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of Jesuit education as set forth in Regis Jesuit’s mission statement and the “Profile of the Jesuit High School Graduate at Graduation.”
  • A continuously updated Colorado License.
  • Master’s degree in counseling or be working toward a Master’s degree, meeting the guidelines stated in the faculty handbook.
  • Capable of working collaboratively.
  • Able to communicate clearly with students, parents and administration.
  • Willing to be an important part of updating the vision and continuing the mission of Regis Jesuit.
  • Experience in college admissions or high school college counseling (at least 3 years) strongly preferred.
  • Necessary skills include excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational ability and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Computer skills and experience with specific college counseling software.
